Louisville KY Endodontist | The Five Best Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay

/, Dentistry, Endodontist/Louisville KY Endodontist | The Five Best Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay

When left untreated, tooth decay can spread to other healthy teeth, causing a mouthful of problems- quite literally. There are a number of preventative steps that you can take to reduce your risk of developing tooth decay. Here are a few tips from our team:

1.) Brush at Least Twice a Day with a Dentist Recommended Toothpaste

A thorough brushing at least twice a day is necessary in the prevention of tooth decay. Brush for at least 2 minutes in the morning and rinse/repeat each night with another two minutes of brushing. Be sure to use a toothbrush that reaches every tooth and that feels comfortable.

2.) Floss, Floss, Floss!

Your daily oral care regimen should include cleaning between your teeth with dental floss or interdental cleaners. Flossing gets to those hard-to-reach places in between your teeth where food can linger after meals. In fact, not flossing means you miss cleaning about 35% of your tooth surface. Keeping every surface of your teeth clean is essential in preventing tooth decay, especially those surfaces that are not visible to the naked eye.

3.) Eat a Tooth-Friendly Diet

Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates and sugars are left on the teeth. Eat nutritious and balanced meals throughout the day and try to minimize your snacking, especially sweet, sticky snacks. Try to get in the habit of swapping sweets for strawberries, or any other healthy snacks with naturally occurring sugars. Your teeth will thank you.

4.) Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps to clean your mouth by flushing out any stubborn food particles clinging to your teeth after a meal. Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, drinking plenty of water.

5.) Visit Your Dentist Regularly for Professional Cleanings and Oral Exams

Regular professional cleanings and oral exams with your dentist will help to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth bright. Don’t forget to schedule a visit to your Louisville Endodontist at least twice a year to achieve optimal oral health.
