//Louisville Endodontist | Endodontic Retreatment: What You Need to Know

Endodontic treatment is a safe and effective solution for treating an infected tooth in a way that can preserve the natural tooth. While this treatment typically lasts for many years, it’s possible for infection to return over time. When this happens, an endodontic retreatment may be recommended.

Why is Endodontic Retreatment Recommended?

Although it is rare for retreatment to be needed, it may help to save a previously treated tooth. An infection is the most common reason a retreatment may be needed. Infections can be caused by:

  • New tooth decay
  • Loose, cracked, or broken crown
  • Delayed placement of the crown following initial treatment
  • Fractured tooth

How is Endodontic Retreatment Performed?

Endodontic retreatment is similar to the initial root canal treatment. Our Louisville endodontist will remove the crown and filling material to treat the infection and clean the canals before refilling to prevent the recurrence of infection. Once this is healed, a new crown will be placed.

If you are experiencing discomfort in a tooth that has previously had root canal treatment, contact our office for an evaluation. We are here for you.
