Apicoectomy (Root End Surgery)
in Louisville
An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure used to treat a persistent infection or inflammation in a tooth that has already undergone root canal therapy. When standard root canal treatment is not enough to eliminate the infection, an apicoectomy may be necessary to save the tooth and restore oral health. This procedure removes the tip of the tooth’s root and the surrounding infected tissue to stop the spread of infection and promote healing.
What Is an Apicoectomy?
Endodontist Louisville
An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a procedure that targets infection at the tip of a tooth’s root. After a root canal has been performed, infection or inflammation can sometimes persist in the surrounding bone tissue, causing pain or swelling. An apicoectomy is performed when retreatment of the root canal is not possible or would not be effective.
During the procedure, Dr. Scott Norton makes a small incision in the gum near the affected tooth to access the root tip and surrounding bone. The inflamed or infected tissue, along with the very end of the tooth’s root, is carefully removed. A small filling is placed at the end of the root to seal it, and the gum is sutured to allow for proper healing. Over time, the bone naturally regenerates, and the tooth returns to full function.

An apicoectomy can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted, even if root canal treatment has already been performed. This procedure is a highly effective way to remove deep-seated infection and preserve your natural smile.

Benefits of an Apicoectomy
Endodontist Louisville

Tooth Preservation
An apicoectomy provides a second chance to save a tooth that has already undergone root canal therapy. By removing the infected root tip, the procedure helps maintain the natural tooth and avoids extraction.

Elimination of Infection
This procedure directly removes the source of infection that lies beyond the reach of a standard root canal, promoting complete healing and preventing the infection from spreading to nearby tissues.

Long-Term Relief
An apicoectomy helps relieve chronic discomfort and inflammation caused by unresolved infection, offering long-term relief and restoring normal tooth function.

The Apicoectomy Treatment Process

1
Evaluation and Incision
Dr. Scott Norton begins by examining the tooth and reviewing X-rays to determine if an apicoectomy is necessary. Once the area is numbed with local anesthesia, a small incision is made in the gum tissue to access the bone and root tip.
2
Root Tip Removal and Filling
The inflamed or infected tissue surrounding the root tip is carefully removed, along with the end of the root itself. A small filling is then placed at the tip of the root to seal it and prevent further infection. The removed tissue may be sent to an oral pathologist for biopsy.
3
Healing and Recovery
The gum is sutured to promote healing, and over the next several months, the bone naturally regenerates around the root. Mild swelling or discomfort is normal during recovery and can be managed with pain medication. If pain persists, patients should contact Dr. Norton’s office for follow-up care.
